Students who successfully transfer college credits from accredited online colleges, especially with an Associates’ degree, graduate on time and have comparable graduation rates to native students at four-year-schools. Transient college credit is coursework that a student completes at another school and applies to the completion of degree requirements at their home institution. Students usually verify that they will be able to transfer these college credits in advance.
Transient students have temporary permission from another school to attend GMC for a specific time frame (usually one term). Many of our transient students enjoy the convenience of GMC’s 8-week quarter system, allowing them to complete required classes in a shorter time frame.
Instead of a transcript, a transient student must provide transient authorization (usually a letter or form) from their primary institution’s registrar’s office. This authorization should list the courses the student may take at GMC as well as when the courses should be taken.
GMC is regionally accredited with The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). In short, the SACSCOC serves as a benchmark for education excellence. The SACSCOC is an umbrella organization that monitors educational quality at degree-granting schools primarily in the Southern United States, as well as some approved international sites and accredited online colleges affiliated with these institutions.
Colleges and universities use regional accreditation to compare institutional quality. Accreditation must be earned and maintained on a continual basis by schools that offer online accelerated bachelor’s degree programs, as well as four-year colleges and universities. Accreditation provides quality assurance and guarantees that colleges will continue to work to improve to maintain their accreditation. It assures peer institutions that standards of educational process and quality have been met and that students have mastered the subject matter in the curriculum.
Over one hundred years ago the US Department of Education divided the US into regions and created accreditation agencies to oversee the schools in each region. These regional agencies monitor faculty, class size, graduation and retention rates, and all other aspects of the student experience to ensure that quality education is being provided. While the regional agency only monitors schools in its area, the quality assurance stamp it puts on your college credits is national in scope; schools in other regions of the country will accept them because common quality standards are applied.
Nationally accredited schools are usually for-profit and are more likely to offer vocational, technical, or religiously-oriented educational programs. They have not held to the same standards of quality assurance as regionally accredited GI Bill online schools like Georgia Military College. If graduation rates at a regionally accredited school fall significantly, for example, they can and will lose accreditation. Some for-profit schools have unacceptably high dropout and incompletion rates – and little incentive to improve them since their ultimate goal is profits for shareholders.
A good rule of thumb is that regionally accredited schools will generally accept the transfer of college credits or an online Associates degree from other regionally accredited schools, but not necessarily from nationally accredited schools. Nationally accredited schools will accept work from other nationally accredited schools, but lack of access to the larger pool of regionally accredited schools can limit a student’s options and stifle their educational progress.
Many nationally accredited for-profit schools do a fine job of educating students. There simply isn’t the same level of oversight to make sure student outcomes are good, though, and students are less likely to be able to transfer college credits to universities. Choosing a regionally accredited online college like GMC for an online military college degree is the best way to keep your career options open in the future and ensure you get a rock-solid educational foundation in the present.
Course articulation compares the content of similar courses at two or more educational institutions. This allows community colleges, online accredited colleges, and universities to make determinations about whether course content is similar enough to allow for transfer college credits between them.
An Articulation Agreement is a transfer agreement between schools. It simplifies the transfer process by specifying exactly which courses students should take at the community college or initial school, and benefits the four-year institution with a steady supply of well-prepared students to balance out attrition.
